The common theme in all of my artwork is the book as an art object and as a structure for storytelling. As a printmaker and book artist I am intrigued by how a suite of wood engravings may act as a single piece of sequential art. As a printmaker I’m attracted to the tactile qualities of the paper and the impressions that can be made from hand printing a wood block. I primarily create my handmade books using wood engravings and letterpress techniques. The theme in my recent wordless narrative explores the life story of Leonard Cohen and how he appears in culture over the last 80 years of his life. I take away the very thing that gives him power, (his mastery of words and lyrics) to see how he manifests as an image in visual culture. Unlike the picture hung on the wall the book begs the reader to turn its pages to reveal its secrets. I try to bring the quality of touch and intimacy back to the experience of the hand printed page. www.george-walker.com
