I live in the village of Haworth in West Yorkshire. I love my surrounding landscape, and it is my enduring inspiration, but sometimes January can be a challenge. A challenge to be motivated to do anything, especially outside. So, I decided that my sketchbook would be the thing that got me out of the house this year. I was amazed by the low-sun dazzling mornings and long, deep shadows. Equally by early street lights in the gloaming, and the shining-wet and glittering roads and bridle paths, glorious in sudden bright flashes. the always present wind, the fleeting snows, and the lashing rain, the white skies and flat grey days. And birds. So many birds, seagulls, crows, jackdaws, pigeons, and tiny blue tits and robins.
And I saw it all, and I felt it all, and I photographed and sketched it all, and worked my month into 19 tiny gouache paintings for The Brooklyn Sketchbook Project!
