My mother died last year, a devastating loss. This sketchbook was a grief activity, collage as a ritual of grief: putting the pieces back together, trying to grow into a new life and relationship with my mother. My source material was an array of fashion magazines and catalogues: despite their smooth paper they offer so many textures and colours to play with. I found the colours changed along with the seasons, but often returned to primal colours and textures: skin, blood. I also incorporated an antique book I found in my mother's house that was falling apart: Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. There has been much revisiting of childhood things and memories in the aftermath of loss.
