As a child, I used to love spending hours and hours pouring over the "Wish Book" catalogs distributed each year by stores such as Sears, JC Penny, and Best. As an adult, I often fear a lot of my imagination, creativity, and hope for the world has been left behind. This sketchbook is an attempt to recapture all of those things.
Regarding my "process," there really wasn't one! Instead, I simply sat down and created the Raroo Stores Wish Book without any real planning done ahead of time. I allowed my imagination guide the process. I wrote and illustrated it as I went, and I did my best to work around goofs I made. Once I had finished, I went back and did a little clean-up, such as "closing" my Es and Os, which I have a tendency to not complete writing!
Raroo Stores is based on a character called Mister Raroo I've used for years. He came to life during the mid 2000s, when my wife and I self-published a video game-themed zine called Game Time With Mister Raroo, and I've used that pen name every since. In many ways, Mister Raroo is a reflection and idealization of all of the positive qualities I strive to exhibit as a human being. In my real life, I am very imperfect, but through Mister Raroo, I can be more of the person I wish to be.
Speaking of real life, I am a husband, a father, and a librarian. I enjoy video games, journaling, doodling, reading, music, pets, hiking, and baking cookies. Thank you for taking a moment to find out more about me!
