Roja: This project allowed me to stay connected to a group of people I admire and feel a deep responsibility toward. The faces in this sketchbook are Iranian women who have each contributed greatly to the struggles for women's rights and freedoms in Iran and who have paid a high price for this important work. Although I left Iran 20 years ago, I have not left behind the sense of responsibility that connects me to people who work hard for equality and justice in the country.
Alina: this Sketchbook Project was meant to serve as a vessel of art inspiration for one very talented person in my life, but then she chose to create a portrait journal of remarkable Iranian women, so I joined in compiling some biographical blurbs to pair with her sketches. As Roja drew each woman, I learned about another pioneering activist, visionary, a scholar, and with a bit of research and some personal accounts from Roja, we assembled a sketchbook snapshot of the Iranian Women’s Movement.
