I've been doing collage art in notebooks for about ten years, often working in more than one at once, and making each page its own piece of art. I began this sketchbook that way but as I went along I found some things I wanted to repeat, and the book has more unity than my usual notebooks do. I think what motivates me as an artist is creating visual unity and strong composition from disparate, disjunctive and often grungy or raw elements. The materials guide the work, I don't begin with a theme or an idea. My visual passions are in the work, but my personal ones come through more in my poetry. I love the fact that my work connects me with people all over the world.
