Exploring and sketching the metaphysical.
This sketchbook project was completed at the bedside. I am a hospice patient with terminal cancer. (Breast cancer that metastasized to bone, lymph nodes and tissues two years after being diagnosed at age 44). With this illness I'm literally closer to the mysterious beyond, but the subject matter of spirits and their unseen realm has always ruled my creative process.
For over two decades I've been exploring the esoteric landscape of the human soul and the high strangeness of metaphysics through visual art. Growing up with my family's indigenous spiritual beliefs is the strongest influence to my creative work. Animism, shamanism, and the existence of spirit beings is a significant part of our native ideology and these subjects are an endless source of inspiration. Favored media is painting on canvas, some sculpting, and sketching.
The motive? To recreate scenes from the mystical dimensions beyond the physical. To delve into the disorder that is death and mortality, and unapologetically explore it. Seek answers. Search for truth. My artistic endeavors illuminate the darkness and highlight the unknown.
We fear what we do not understand or are unable to see, but when we are free to examine what was once a mystery, our unease falls away.
When the mysterious beyond is laid bare in all of its prismatic hues under the spotlight of my paintbrush, the monsters are naked. Truly there is nothing to fear. Our souls are eternal. The power was ours all along.
