“Real Portraits of Pretend People (and Other Things...)”

Project: The Sketchbook Project VOL. 14
My name is Annette Dawm and I live in London, ON. I recently started displaying and selling my art in small galleries. Soon after, my cousin encouraged me to send my work to New York. Being a virtually unknown artist in Canada, this seemed impossible. Then one day, I read about another person who submitted their work to The Sketchbook Project and it seemed meant to be.
I like making composite images in Photoshop, so I started the book by making "pretend" people out of different photos. While working on another project, I learned a lot about copyright issues, especially with collages, and I became worried that my sketchbook would not be acceptable. Then I found out that there were over 4000 collage books in The Sketchbook Project, so everything seemed to work out.
When I was about half done, I found a lot of scrap paper that I wanted to use, so that became the "Other Things" in the book. I also included two drawings from my public school days so that I could tell my younger-self that my work made it to New York!
P. S. I am super excited that my book is online now! I noticed that it was uploaded backwards so keep that in mind. They may fix it, I'm not sure. Either way, I think The Sketchbook Project is awesome and I will probably do it again some time.
