Making art can be a form of meditation, and I often find myself drawn to time-consuming, repetitive techniques. The book is inspired by Buddhist mandalas and the modern tradition of sigil-making most closely associated with chaos magic. Each page begins with a simple shape and a single rule to follow, so the patterns are generative and unpredictable. Mistakes are impossible; any slip of the pen just changes the next iteration of the pattern. When I begin a page, I have no idea how it will turn out and I keep my mind blank to avoid controlling the process.
In my work I like to explore the ideas of change, death, purging, and chthonic experience. Each page is a meditation, centered around whatever obsession I am managing that day. In that way this sketchbook is a physical record of my attempts to develop focus and untangle disordered thinking.
