I'm an artist who responds to the world with shape and color. My recent work involves creating "hybrid paintings" on paper comprised of cut out abstract elements inhabiting space. I make points of entry that physically engage and suggest new ways of seeing. Suspended from the ceiling and walls, this work combines the formal concerns of painting while extending into space like sculpture.
Frankly, this is a little intimidating! I approached the sketchbook as I do my paintings - experimental and loose, and tried to avoid getting too concerned with results. I began to paint with watercolors. I cut shapes out of the paintings and then scanned those. I printed the scanned images and made them into the pages of my books. In some cases I collaged other shapes onto the printed pages, and one or two of the pages are the actual paintings. The final touch was the addition of black lines on top of the other work. The first page is just words, and is dedicated to my kids and bemoaned our current political climate.
