i chose the theme of connections for my sketchbook--i based all of my decisions in making the work on that concept. i took the sketchbook apart in order to create areas of shape and color that flowed from the beginning to the end of the book using a continuous graphite line. I also added typed text, collaged images of maps, dictionary pages, and stamps (landscape-based) to continue the concept throughout.
although i use different materials and media in my work, i often return to collage and the use of text. this project allowed me to make work without an agenda--it was just an opportunity to explore.
the connection of word and image is a theme that i often utilize, so working on this book made me happy. it also gave the chance to include materials that belonged to my grandmother (dictionary), and my dad (stamps). those added another layer of connection that produced a very personal attachment to this book.
