In this sketchbook Constellation: Portraits of Perseverance The Drawings, I have drawn some of the people that I have engaged with over the many years working with those with Alzheimer's Disease and other life's frailties. I want to call attention to those whom need much care, respect, and love but are often forgotten in our society. I celebrate their perseverance and that they are still important members of life.
I drew them because they are beautiful.
Please know that participants and their POA gave me permission to draw them.
Art has defined Sandi Sharp's life since she first discovered the joy of creating. As a young girl making cardboard sandals and Escher like floor plans, Sandi's philosophy of energy in art, of the constantly moving and ever evolving nature of life, was paramount as she grew as an artist.
In her own words, Sandi has been “most interested in movement, motion, energy …or stasis.” This philosophy drives her artwork defining movement and rhythm and how she can capture them within the two dimensions of her easel. “Art is all about observation, connecting and engaging with whatever it is one is creating. It should be honest and always evolving.”
“One of the ways I choose to explore and celebrate life is through drawing. For me this happens in the sensation of drawing that then extends to the emotional and soulful qualities that I seek to explore in drawing from life, and specifically, the human figure. It is captivating. There are often ‘ things that cannot be expressed in words, but can be voiced through art—never boring, always challenging and an endless journey of discovery and surprise.”
Sandi pursued her study of art through formal education, receiving her BFA from the College of Mount St. Joseph. Sandi has followed art into the classroom as well, teaching classes at the Dayton Art Institute, the Loveland Art Center and the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and has facilitated art programs for those with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. She has also been an Activity Director in long term care nursing facilities creating and implimenting life enriching programming throughout many disiplines.
