My biggest problem with my brain is that it takes forever to decide. So when I finally decided on "This isn't what it seems", I still had a million choices to make. I initially started with a memoir type thing, but that devolved quickly. And in the last weekend I decided - unicorns, no wait, narwhals.... No. Even better, I was going to tell the 100% Truly Factual Tale of how Narwhals evolved from Unicorns.
But of course, that's not really the case. Here, the "this" that isn't what it seems, is a Narwhal's "horn" which is actually a tusk. However, try telling elementary school me that when I really needed unicorns to exist in some part of the world, and try telling post-grad school me that now that I still really want unicorns to exist in some part of the world.
There is more I wish I could have done, had I not been drawing literally up until the last minute to get it to the UPS store in time for an April 30th Postmark. I did have a TON of fun with the project though, I did a lot of fun research into beluga whales, narwhals, and even the evolution of horses. Once I found a story to tell that I'm passionate about it was so easy and fun, the pictures just flew straight from my head to the page. And I think I'm going to take the barebones story that I told in this book, and maybe look toward expanding it into an even more science filled children's book.
My recommendation for anyone else thinking about starting this is to get started sooner rather than later, and give yourself the time to make it what you want it to be.
