When I first heard about the Sketchbook project I wanted to be a part of this collaborative. My heart raced with excitement when I ordered by book. I choose the theme, "Underwater" and I immediately felt like what IF I didn't finish my book. Instantly I became anxious. But, i did finish it and while it is not "perfect" it is my take on the issues of pollution in our oceans. I live in Southern California near the ocean and on a regular basis I head out to document my life near the pacific. Over the years I have seen the effects of pollution turn a beautiful place into an unhealthy ecosystem. It must be stopped.
In order to relieve my anxiety I made a plan to complete this project. first I work a poemI drew and wrote the poem in my book in an effort to awaken others to be mindful of the effects on pollution on our environment. I have drawn in pen and ink since childhood but only in the last six years have I focus my art to tell a story or take a stand.
I have never participated in a project like this and at first I was really worried I wouldn't be able to accomplish my goal. I immediately changed my thinking about drawing and instead of randomly drawing on page after page, like I do in my personal sketchbooks i tackled this task in a way to achieve success. I planned it out. First, I wrote a poem, mapped out my story, counted pages, thought up drawings and I set to work. The result is a completed story. Completing this sketchbook has given me the creative energy to know that I have potential to write and draw stories around issues that concern me. I plan on using this version as a prototype for a more refined and finished version of this story. My hope is that each of us with read about our oceans and collaborate to make changes to our way of lie. Think, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Up-cycle, educate, repeat...
I feel like the completion of this book is a huge stepping stone for me to create other works similar to this one. "Come With Me Under the Sea" is a prototype for me to dive into crafting books on the subjects I feel passion about.
In the last six years I have build a community of international artist friends who encourage me on a daily bases. Visit me on Instagram @tinawaynearts and lets connect and collabteorate.
