Originally from Fife in Scotland, I emigrated to America in October 2013 with my husband and our four sons. I have been creating art my entire life. I do not just enjoy art; I need art. Art nourishes me and provides some balance in my life, even if it is just a quick 10 minute sketch in a busy day. In addition to being an artist-illustrator, I am a book lover, movie enthusiast, and general nerd and my interests often inform or inspire my art work.
My sketchbook contains 32 illustrations of fictional female characters. The basis of my selection was the idea that each character would be someone I would enjoy sitting and chatting with, perhaps over a steaming cup of tea. They, therefore, did not have to be characters I admired - I was keen to avoid any sort of value judgment - they simply had to be well-constructed characters who I found intriguing or interesting and who engaged my imagination in some way. As I drew, I pondered what questions I might ask if I could spend time with that character, and what might their answers be.
This sketchbook represents my first time participating in the Sketchbook Project and I am very pleased that I pushed myself (because my Inner Critic was loud) to take the leap and join in because being part of this global project has been such a delight.
