This book took over 50 hours to produce. Throughout the book is written the poem below. This poem appears as lines and fragments, each line spread across a page or so. This poem was originally written by myself, Vera Wiggins, around 2002-2003 and has since been edited, as seen in this artsy rendering.
This book is meant to be as though provoking as it is aesthetically and artistically pleasing. The poem is inspired by the concept of not judging a book by its cover.
I am a book
And not just an ordinary book
But an ancient and mysterious one.
I have sat on this shelf for eternity
And have seen what walks by
Yet I am only seen
By those whom could respect mine pages.
I hold words
Within my pages
Words that are not clear
To someone who can not relate
Words that have hidden meanings
And behind those hidden meanings
Are not only words of wisdom, but of feeling.
Those who see me
Are those who respect my words
Or can even relate to my everlasting pain.
Those who ponder at my mysterious look
And ancient cover
Are those who can relate but are uncertain of if I will break
For I have sat on this shelf for eons
And eons more I shall sit
The silver lettering is tarnished to a black color
And my golden trim has been chipped and marred
My leather covering has been faded and torn
But my appearance hides no secrets
Even the ancient lettering can still be translated.
Everything is readable
Everything is perfect
Except for the feelings behind the meanings
Behind the memories and behind the revealing cover
I am mysterious in a way that keeps me alive
And so I am left here to teach and to express
To guide in need.
I will sit where I am
Collecting dust, rotting in my seat
Gathering memories and records
Of whom has sat and attempted to understand me
Hoping that one day a person with actual understanding
Will show up and learn the hidden secrets of the world.
