I am interested in patterns that are seen in and inspired by our natural world and interpreted through our imagination. These patterns influence us throughout our life. They can be culturally related, such as patterns seen in Islamic Architecture, or held deeply in our personal experiences, such as a distant memory of grandma's patterned wool rug. Equally, the patterns can be something of a more abstract nature, such as the pattern of light and shadow that is created as sunlight moves through the trees or the reflections seen on the water.
This sketchbook is an exploration of different textures, patterns and colours. The pages have been created using mixed media, including intricate etchings, gentle impressions of plant forms, linoprints, hand cut stamps, watercolour, collage and thread embellishments.
The resulting patterns and textures contained within the pages influence different emotional responses for each viewer. Some may evoke a distant memory or a feeling of connection to something in our past. Others may simply make us feel warm or even uncomfortable. Each viewer will create their own unique interpretation.
