My sketchbook project is an experiment in using my home printer as a tool for painting, foregoing the typical paintbrush and instead directing a machine to spray the ink across the page. I've created patterns digitally and also combined images of my paintings, layering them and sometimes printing over them several times. Inkjet printing is very seductive because of it's flat and velvet like quality. It makes for a lush and vibrant field of color.
I've chosen California as my theme because I grew up in Los Angeles and I think this has directly influenced the flat and graphic nature of my work. I was raised in a city with stark light and high contrasting shadows. California is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and I've chosen plants and flowers as a central theme in my sketchbook.
