I set myself a daily task: starting on November 19th and every day from then until December 19th, I made a collage from parts of that day's printed edition of the New York Times. Except for 2 days at Thanksgiving, the collages were made on the exact day the paper was published. The first images were mostly abstract, but as the month went on, they became more about the news of the day, incorporating text and headlines from the news. Given that I was using the Times as my source, perhaps all the images should have been like that!
I'm a graphic designer, but since art school in England in the 1960s, I've regularly made collages from bits of paper, just for the hell of it. When this project was over, it was a relief not to be restricted to the sketchbook's small page size, and to the slightly muted colors you get from printing on newsprint.
