I received my Printmaking BFA from the John Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN and currently work at a local art gallery in Santa Ana, CA and for the artist Bill Viola.
I honestly didn't know what I wanted to do with my sketchbook initially. It seemed rather overwhelming with so many possibilities available. Eventually, I just grabbed a sharpie and started drawing a pattern on the front and back covers and then filled the entire book with pattern designs. However, I wasn't satisfied with just the patterns I created so I cut out background shapes from card stock that closely matched the brown, recycled paper cover on the sketchbook. After that, I decided I wanted the shapes to serve as backdrops for portraits of little fantastical animals that I sketched up fairly quickly. I cut the animals out and juxtaposed them on the shapes to create interesting movement for the creature and atypical compositions with the animals leaping out of the background shapes or hovering on top of them.
This experience was more of experimentation with elements of design and a somewhat different drawing style than what I'm used to. I feel like I just went with my gut feeling of color choice and design and it wasn't as planned out as is normal with my other projects. It was fun to experiment and let loose a little bit!
Things that motivate/influence me as an artist...Instagram and looking at what other artists are doing in the world, tumblr (again, for the same reason), music, movies, books (particularly graphic novels...ex) Daniel Clowes, Adrian Tomine, Chris Ware, Jaime Hernandez, etc.) I would say that I'm lucky that I'm pretty self motivated besides all of those influences and I just feel the need to create something and always trying to better myself as an artist (with technique and content) or otherwise I feel like a worthless human being and a waste of space on the planet.
I care a lot about animals and their rights and I would say that's definitely reflected in my work as of late.
