Originally, I thought that The Sketchbook Project would be a great way for my father (Charles Johnson, “Differences and Similarities” sketchbook) and I to work collaboratively on an art project with the same theme. He has influenced my artwork, whether I rebel against his style or incorporate it into mine. However, being independent-minded artists, we didn’t agree on a theme. I began sketching ideas for paintings* exploring the female identity which is the thread weaving the majority of my artwork together. As we worked on our sketches, my father and I would email or text them to each other. He completed his while I was having a creative block with only 2 spreads and 1 page left. After suggesting that I look through his work for inspiration, I was able to finish before the deadline. Communicating through artwork had a profound impact on our relationship, and now that the project is over, we have decided to work on shared themes and continue to sketch “together.”
* I completed 11 acrylic and mixed media paintings based on the drawings.
