This book was inspired by my Qi Gong practice and is based on the 5 elements: Wood, fire, earth, metal and water. I later tied in my ongoing concerns for the environment. For example, 'wood' symbolised the growth of population and cities, 'fire', our consumption of resources and 'fuel' tied in with population, 'earth' I looked at space, structure and distance as well as 'balance', 'metal' was tied in to 'harvest' of food, minerals and other resources and lastly, 'water' was tied into the cycle of life, endings and beginnings along with highlighting the concern of climate change. It was interesting to see how each symbol could transition and inform aspects of the following element. That the transition pages helped me to make interesting links and conections betweent the different 'states'. I used an old atlas as the base for the collage which was great for the material, textural aspects along with further building on the internal themes present in the book. I always find working to a deadline helps galvanise your ideas to fruition in ways that are difficult to achieve without this impetus.
