Aliss Valerie Terrell
Trilingual writer and performer
I was born and grew up in a rural Washington, D.C. suburb. By a quirk of fate, I started learning French and Russian in kindergarten and it changed the course of my life. After High School, while a student at Rutgers University, I got scholarships for summer study at the University of Saint Petersburg, Russia and the Bryn Mawr Program in Avignon, France. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and received a Fulbright for my Masters at La Sorbonne, following that with a degree in Holistic Psychology from l’Institut OSE. Meanwhile, I found true love with a Frenchman, got married, and became a French citizen. I have two children--a daughter and a son. Over the years, I’ve written articles about fashion for Actuastyl (Promostyl, Paris) and about children for LEADER Magazine (GSUSA, New York). My lyrics and music have appeared on TV, (Les Guignols de l’Info, Sous le soleil, Corto Maltèse, numerous childrens’ animated series), in film (Régine, Une femme très amoureuse), and on stage, most recently in the musical Soweto, based on the life of Nelson Mandela. I’ve written and adapted French screenplays and subtitled successful French movies including Oscar-winning La môme (La Vie en Rose) and La journée de la jupe, awarded a César. As a singer-songwriter, I’ve recorded for Virgin, Polydor and Gaumont, performing at major venues like le Zénith and l’Olympia. I’ve produced and co-written three CD’s, M’Blue: Jazzit, Le Resto Karmique (a musical in which I played the female lead) and Aliss Terrell & Mister Lips (distributed on I-tunes and Amazon). I was the first person ever to star in a rap video shot on Red Square, “Life is Kife”. I’m the author of two illustrated books for the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketch Book Project, Love From Leningrad and A Long Line of Monsters. My poetry has been published in two anthologies, The Joy That Follows and Best Poems and Poets of 2003. I’ve made several two Youtube videos: Meridian Sky, So Long, and the My Paris series. In July 2015, I was selected by C & A, European retail clothing giant, to write for a media project including text and performance. Right now I’m blogging, revising a memoir about my teenage summer in Russia and return there to adopt my son, developing a children’s book about time, and contributing to The Trump Antidote @ thetrumpantidote.com.
