I am a UK artist based in London. I love to work directly in a sketchbook to record landscape as I walk and draw. I have been in Japan, Finland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal and Peru on art residencies and study visits.
Responding to the colour and lyrical qualities of landscape that I find when I am walking through it are what interest me the most. In particular I have used a zigzag/concertina format for a sketchbook because I like the way it can physically expand. I like how it can be very long and horizontal, or suspended to be upright and vertical.
I further develop the book by adding more colour, ink, writing, sewing threads, photographs and prints. I want the book to really convey the excitement and experience of the journey I have been making.
I then choose and develop selected images and make a series of linoprints. I print on thin Japanese paper and use vibrant, colourful printing inks, I like how the paper really absorbs the saturated ink.
Last year I went on a bookbinding course and from this I am able to make handmade books using lino print imagery or digitally printed images of prints or sketchbook studies and I add stitching, writing and mixed media too.
