I approached my sketchbook as a series of responses to random occurences during my summer. The first object, a leaf, happened to fall on my lap while I was laying out on a lounger in the back yard. I drew it on the first page, and went from there. It was like a quiet sign that I felt I should acknowledge, so I started looking out for similar objects and happenings for response in my work.
