Brooklyn Art Library
Brooklyn Art Library is home to The Sketchbook Project collection in its physical form. Our walls are lined with shelves that hold the tens of thousands of books currently in the collection. The library serves as a reading room where you can get cozy and spend an afternoon enjoying artwork in a hands-on experience with the help of our librarians.
With so many books in the library, we’ve developed our own system that makes it easy for anyone to explore. Each book is individually barcoded and cataloged with searchable details, like where the book is from, the materials used, the artist’s name, tag words, and much more. Whether you are interested in seeing a book about robots, from Berlin, or even books selected for you at random, you can search and explore by pretty much any way you can think of using your own mobile device when in our space.
Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY, this space is where The Sketchbook Project's diverse contributors come together and serves as our link to New York’s creative community. Our storefront encourages interaction between artists and their audience, and introduces our members' work to new viewers. Brooklyn Art Library also hosts readings, artist presentations, and welcomes group visits, which can be reserved here.
You have the world’s largest collection of artists’ books at your fingertips! When artists in The Sketchbook Project opt to have their work digitized, their completed books are professionally photographed and uploaded to our Digital Library.
Browse 15,836 sketchbooks online anytime from your computer, tablet, or mobile device. Create a free account to curate your own collections and lists of favorites, share books with friends, and send some love to an artist whose book you like. Just like browsing in person, the Digital Library allows you to explore by artist name, location, themes, and much more.
Use the Digital Library as a creative resource for finding new artists to follow, and a place to put together your own stockpile of incredible illustrators, storytellers, and book-makers from all over the world. Planning a visit to Brooklyn Art Library or one of our Mobile Library events? Use the Digital Library’s ‘Queue’ function to start your own list of books that you want to check out in person.
There’s nothing like getting to hold a sketchbook in your hands and flip through the pages. We bring that analog experience on the road in our Mobile Library, which transports thousands of Sketchbooks to cities across North America for pop-up events at museums and galleries.
Exploring the collections works the same way as it does at Brooklyn Art Library, with all of the books on board being searchable by many different criteria that each visitor can explore. The Mobile Library holds about 4,500 sketchbooks from the collection. All books return to the permanent collection Brooklyn Art Library after they are finished with their tour.
