Your book has a new home at the Brooklyn Art Library, our storefront exhibition space. This might be a little bit like the feeling you get when you drop your first child off at college. But, don’t worry — we’ll make sure your book is warm and dry, eating all its veggies, and only hanging out with the good sketchbooks.

#

Our Mobile Library will head out next summer to cities across North America. Follow along on Instagram as your book will go on a road trip of a lifetime. The best part is, you will receive a notification EVERY TIME your book is viewed on tour!

#

Books archived in our Digital Library are checked out more than two million times every year and can be experienced by anyone with an Internet connection. Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any other questions, please visit our dedicated support website at support.sketchbookproject.com What is The Sketchbook Project?

The Sketchbook Project is a crowd-sourced library of over 30,000 sketchbooks (and counting) submitted by people of all ages and backgrounds from more than 135 countries. Anyone can add their voice to the collection by signing up to fill a Sketchbook Project book of their own to submit. The entire project is on view to the public as a permanent collection at Brooklyn Art Library, our storefront exhibition space in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY.

What if I don’t sketch?

We use ‘sketchbook’ as loose term for experimentation in creativity. You can write, draw, collage, share photographs, list, document, record, tell a story, or any other way of filling a page.

What is Digitizing?

Select digitizing, and your completed book will be professionally photographed and uploaded for you to The Sketchbook Project’s online Digital Library. There are already tens of thousands of books online and which have had over two million views. Anyone will be able to view and share your book online, and just like our physical collection, the Digital Library is searchable by artist name, location, and other criteria.

What are themes?

Themes are one way we categorize the books at Brooklyn Art Library and are meant to give you a jumping-off point for how to fill your book. Your book can adhere to a theme as literally or as loosely as you want.

What do you mean by tour?

Every year we take to the road with all of the new Sketchbook Project submissions. We will take your book in our Mobile Library to cities across the country where we put on pop-up exhibitions at museums, galleries, and other incredible spaces to share your work. This year’s tour includes Brooklyn, Atlanta, Miami, Austin, Chicago, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle! After touring, your book will come back to the permanent collection at Brooklyn Art Library.

I just signed up for The Sketchbook Project. What happens now?

Congrats! We'll be sending your official book in the mail for The Sketchbook Project 2015. Connect your book to an account, fill it up, and mail it back to us by 1/31/15 - more detailed instructions come with your book, but that’s the the basics.

Why do I have to connect and catalog my book?

Books remain anonymous until connected to an account - once you’ve connected your book, you’ll be able to fill out important cataloguing details like your name, the materials you used, tag words, and much more. All of these details are searchable in our library system - the more you fill out, the more ways people will have of finding your awesome work once it’s a part of our library.

How will I know what’s going on with my book after I send it in?

You can choose to get notified by text message or email each time you book is checked out! You can also keep up with it on your book’s Digital Library page if you’ve elected digitizing - once your book is online, you will be able to track how many views it has had online and in person, read comments, and more.

Can I give a book to a friend?

Yes. Whoever receives the submission can register their book with all of their own information and follow the instructions to mail it in when they’re finished. It makes the perfect gift for any creative person in your life, or anyone who’s got a story to tell!

Can I collaborate on a book?

Sure! We have books worked on by parents and their kids, friends, classrooms, and many other forms of creative communities. If you’d like to learn more about groups working on The Sketchbook Project , head to www.sketchbookproject.com/groups.

What does one of your sketchbooks look like?

Our custom-crafted sketchbooks are 5"W x 7"H, bound with wire staples, filled with 32 pages of 70# white text stock and secured with sturdy chipboard covers. They are made in Portland, OR, USA and use eco-friendly inks and recycled materials.

Can I rebind or alter the format of my book?

Certainly. You can customize it in just about any way you like, but we require that your finished sketchbook stays the original dimensions of 5" x 7" and does not end up exceeding 1" in width. Your barcode must always remain on the bottom right corner of your sketchbook.

What materials can I use in my book?

We welcome a wide range of materials and methods, but please consider the following exceptions: Abrasive and hazardous materials, glitter, and materials that may smudge or come off on hands or other books are not permitted. Do not glue delicate or sculptural objects to the cover of your book. Try to keep in mind that it will be going on and off shelf and being handled frequently.

I'm finished! Where do I mail my sketchbook?

Congratulations! You did it! Please send your sketchbook to:
